Back from Vacation

We’re home now after a lovely trip to visit friends and family in Tennessee and California. There will be photos on Flickr soon enough, but I just wanted to share this little window into our hellish return flight. While we sat in the plane waiting for a replacement co-pilot, for a total delay of 4 hours, the interior looked more like a disco than a plane.

If I’m not back in 30 days, send help.

I believe there is an immature synthetic sentient being surfing the Internet and leaving comments on blogs

It is our duty to help it learn and grow. From the comments on a blog post about a confusing light switch:

Slipping Through Akismet

Lately I’ve been getting chunks of spam comments that are getting through my Akismet plugin and being posted. This not only annoys me, but it has exposed a little problem in the manual Akismet workflow. I can’t see any way to mark these comments as spam for the Akismet engine because they are considered valid, posted comments by Wordpress.

The comments look like this:

Author : wyydlekzto (IP: 211.46.221.34 , 211.46.221.34)
E-mail : kquze@rorhdpv.com
URI : http://hifue.info
Whois : http://ws.arin.net/cgi-bin/whois.pl?queryinput=211.46.221.34
Comment:
Thanks for this site!
<a href="http://hifue.info" rel="nofollow">hifue.info</a>

As you can see, Wordpress lovingly appends the rel=”nofollow” attribute to any links in comments to prevent those links from affecting Google PageRanks.

However, I still have to go in and manually delete these comments, knowing that by doing so I am adding nothing about these comments to the Akismet Mother Brain. Grr.

Dubious Honor #43

I had a bug in my ear for the first time in my life last night. I could feel and hear it crawling across my eardrum. When I finally got it out in the bathroom, it turned out to be a click beetle about 1/2 inch in length.

Sweet.

Alter Ego Narrated Slideshow

New Scientist is hosting a narrated slideshow of some of the portraits from the upcoming book Alter Ego which presents photos of people and their in-game representations, or avatars. I like that the presentation covers a wide spectrum of what people get out of online gaming, from mere entertainment to rehabilitation and commerce.

I always enjoyed meeting interesting new people while playing World of Warcraft, and I personally “met” many people for whom the game provided a means to communicate and socialize in an environment where their disabilities had little or no impact.
