The Plight of Paramedics in Israel and Palestine

MetaFilter is linking to a CNN article about the struggle of Israeli paramedics dealing with the victims of Palestinian suicide bombers. Shock and Awe brings some attention to the struggle of Palestinian paramedics dealing with the victims of Israeli rocket attacks. But the Palestinians have one more variable to deal with: Israeli checkpoints which can delay an ambulance for up to 5 hours at a time.

This is where I should insert the disclaimer about not supporting terrorist activity by the Palestinians when I decry the actions of Israel. A coworker and I were talking about this very issue today (I was remarking that Israel has been getting very publicly spanked by the Bush administration lately) and he took the viewpoint that if the Palestinians would just take on the tactics of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. world opinion would shift in their favor and the whole mess would come an end. I can’t even begin to imagine how difficult it would be to practice peaceful, non-violent resistance while under the gun of a military occupation.

I just hope that Bush’s new focus on reigning Sharon in will actually produce some results: fewer people dying.
